Sony Xperia 5 V: compact sub-flagship with updated camera system
Sony has unveiled a new compact sub-flagship Xperia 5 V at IFA 2023 in Berlin.
The main difference between the smartphone and last year's model is the reduction in the number of cameras. The device retains the features of its predecessors - 3.5 mm headphone jack and a separate camera control button.
Sony Xperia 5 V features a 6.1-inch OLED screen with FHD+ resolution, 21:9 aspect ratio and 120 Hz refresh rate. The display has symmetrical bezels hiding the selfie camera and front stereo speakers. Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protective glass is used.
The smartphone is based on Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor, the amount of RAM is 8 Gb, the capacity of internal flash memory - 128 Gb, which can be expanded with microSD cards.
Sony has ditched the triple camera in favor of a dual camera. The main camera gets a 1/1.35-inch 52MP sensor - the same as the Xperia 1 V. By default, it shoots at 12MP resolution with an EFR of 24mm, but there's also the option to take photos with 2x zoom (EFR of 48mm) without loss of quality. The second camera remains unchanged, a 12MP (1/2.5-inch) ultra-wide-angle camera, complemented by a 16mm EFR lens. The 12MP front-facing camera is migrated from last year's model (1/2.9″).
A 5000 mAh battery with 30W fast charging support (not included) is responsible for battery life. The battery charges from 0% to 50% in 30 minutes. There's also support for LTE, 5G, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, GPS, USB-C 3.2, eSIM and NFC. The operating system is Android 13. Available body colors are black, blue and platinum.
Sales of the Sony Xperia 5 V will start at the end of September at a price of 999 euros. Pre-orders are already open.
