Fairphone 5 'ethical' smartphone unveiled - it will get 10 years of support
Dutch company Fairphone, which is famous for repairable gadgets of modular design using environmentally friendly materials, has introduced another smartphone. The device is called Fairphone 5, and it is promised up to ten years of updates and support.
The manufacturer promises at least five major Android updates and eight years of security updates - extended support will run through 2031-2033, which is eight or ten years. To make such a serious commitment feasible, the Fairphone 5 uses Qualcomm's QCM6490 processor, which is designed for industrial equipment. The company has specified that the chip is manufactured using 6nm technology, and it uses an Adreno 642L graphics subsystem here - probably some variant of the Snapdragon 778G platform. In comparison, the Fairphone 4 runs on a more modest Qualcomm Snapdragon 750G chip.
Traditionally high repairability of the device is ensured by its modular design - ten separate modules, which are relatively easy to replace: for example, these are slots for microSD card and SIM card, as well as the camera module. All of them are available separately on Fairphone's website and from the manufacturer's partners.
Fairphone 5 features decent specs: 8GB of RAM, 256GB of onboard storage (plus memory cards up to 2TB), 6.46-inch OLED display with a resolution of 2770 × 1224 pixels, 90Hz refresh rate and Gorilla Glass 5. The 4200 mAh removable battery supports 30W wired charging. The Fairphone 5's battery lasts for 1,000 charge cycles, after which it drops to 80 percent - which means you'll have to replace the battery about every three years, but that's hardly a problem because it's removable.
The smartphone features a main camera with a 50-megapixel Sony IMX800 sensor and optical image stabilization; a 50-megapixel Sony IMX858 camera with ultra-wide-angle lens and autofocus; and a front camera of the same resolution for selfies and video calls. The Fairphone 5 runs Android 13, boasts Bluetooth 5.2 and Wi-Fi 6E, dual-SIM support (Nano-SIM and eSIM), NFC module and side-mounted fingerprint scanner, dual speakers, and an IP55-rated body (partial dust protection and water splash protection). The manufacturer also promised that it will be possible to install an alternative OS, but there are no details about it yet.
The Fairphone 5 has a recommended retail price of €699 and is available in Sky Blue and Matte Black colors, as well as a transparent case. The device comes with a five-year warranty.
